SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and a device for equipping a license plate, preferably a license plate of a motor vehicle, with at least one data carrier made with the possibility of contactless reading, as well as to a license plate, primarily a license plate of a motor vehicle. Accurate positioning of the data carrier in a receiving device of a license plate case is particularly time-consuming. Due to a high degree of required accuracy and related complexity of the process for manufacturing the license plate, one has to reckon with increased production costs. The invention proposes a method and a device, using which license plates can be manufactured in a profitable way. This is achieved due to that the license plate is equipped with at least one data carrier made with the possibility of contactless reading. The data carrier is fixed on the license plate. At least one label is fixed on the license plate case or on a metal sheet for the manufacture of several license plate cases, which includes at least one data carrier, wherein at least one transceiver with the data carrier and at least one antenna is integrated into the label, and several labels are applied to the metal sheet. Labels are applied to the metal sheet with an arrangement at a distance from each other, and the distance between adjacent labels corresponds to a length of the license plate case.
