SUBSTANCE: invention is intended to determine the grain size in sheet metal. The substance of the invention lies in the fact that a series of ultrasonic pulses is generated at the site of the control object and the signals are received due to the interaction of these pulses with the material of the control object, as well as the amplitude-frequency analysis of the received signal, carried out after the end of the impact of the pulses, the selection of informative parameters of the received signals, the values of which determine the average grain size in the test area of the control object, while the frequency of the spectrum maximum of at least one of the ultrasonic pulses radiated to the test site of the control object satisfies the specified condition, after which the average grain size is calculated according to the specified formula.
EFFECT: increasing the accuracy of determining grain sizes in sheet metal, as well as removing restrictions associated with the thickness of the test object.
