SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for producing an unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or an ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid by reacting a carboxylic acid and/or an ester of a carboxylic acid with formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst, wherein the catalyst contains: (i) a compound containing at least one first metallic element selected from boron, magnesium, zirconium and hafnium, and (ii) an alkali metal element, where the compound and the alkali metal element are applied to a carrier containing silanol groups, the average particle size of the compound of the first metal element is 0.4 nm or more and 50 nm or less, the catalyst satisfies the following formula (1):

in which X is the molar ratio of the alkali metal element to at least one first metal element in the catalyst, Y is the BET specific surface area of the catalyst (m2/g) and Z is the number of silanol groups per unit area (amount/nm2).

EFFECT: invention provides a process for producing a carboxylic acid and/or an unsaturated carboxylic acid with high selectivity.
