FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to methods of producing catalysts. Disclosed is a method of producing a catalyst, comprising steps of: a) providing a non-calcined metal-modified porous substrate, where the silicon dioxide substrate has an average pore size of 2–1000 nm, where this silicon dioxide substrate contains isolated silanol groups (-SiOH) in an amount of ˂2.5 groups per nm2 and where the modifier metal is selected from one or more metals from boron, magnesium, aluminum, zirconium, hafnium and titanium, where the modifier metal is present in the form of mono- or dinuclear modifier metal particles; b) optionally removing any solvent or liquid carrier from the modified silica substrate; c) optionally drying the modified silica substrate; d) treating an uncalcined substrate based on a metal-modified silicon dioxide with a catalytic metal, to cause adsorption of the catalytic metal on the metal-modified silicon dioxide substrate, where the catalytic metal is an alkali metal; and e) calcining the impregnated silica substrate from step d). Invention also discloses an uncalcined catalyst precursor and a catalyst for producing an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or ester, as well as versions of the method of producing an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or ester.

EFFECT: obtained catalyst shows high levels of selectivity when producing ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or ester, as well as reduced sintering of the catalyst surface during the process.
