FIELD: analytical chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method for determining the mass fraction of uranium (III) and uranium (IV) in their joint presence in uranium-containing chloride melts of alkali metals. The method includes determining the total uranium content in the melt sample, titrating the sample containing uranium (III) and uranium (IV), while determining the total uranium content in the melt sample is carried out by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, uranium (III) and uranium (IV) titration is carried out with a solution of potassium dichromate in relation to a sample dissolved in a solution of iron trichloride, and the mass fraction of uranium (III) in the sample is determined as the difference between the total content of uranium and the mass fraction of uranium (IV) in the melt sample, which is calculated by the formula:

where is a mass fraction in the melt sample, %; is the concentration conversion factor from % to fractions of a unit; is the ratio for converting the volume of titrant from cm3 to dm3; is the mass fraction of the total uranium content in the melt sample, %; MU is the molar mass of uranium, g/mol; is the concentration of potassium dichromate in solution, mol/dm3; V is the volume of potassium dichromate used for titration, cm3; is the mass of the melt sample, g.
EFFECT: possibility of quantitative determination of the mass fraction of uranium (III) and uranium (IV) in their joint presence in uranium-containing chloride melts of alkali metals with a relatively low error while reducing the duration of the analysis and the consumption of reagents.
