FIELD: oil and gas industry.

SUBSTANCE: method for locating a trip cementing plug in a casing string. The method comprises the following steps: placing the trip cementing plug inside the casing string filled with the first fluid; pumping the displacement fluid after the trip cementing plug forcing the trip cementing plug through the interior of the casing, wherein at least one hydraulic fluid pump generates a harmonic acoustic signal in the form of pressure waves that travel down the casing and are reflected from the cementing plug; recording and transmitting pressure data to the pressure data collection system; mathematical processing of the pressure data to measure the double travel time of the harmonic acoustic signal reflected from the trip plug; determining the speed of propagation of the acoustic signal; determining the location of the trip cementing plug based on the measured double travel time and the speed of propagation of the acoustic signal. The trip cementing plug acts as a reflection boundary for the acoustic signal, and its movement changes the resonant frequencies of pressure fluctuations in the casing.

EFFECT: effective and accurate location of the trip cementing plugs inside the casing during the well cementing operation.
