SUBSTANCE: producing modified hydrophilic and hydrophobic mineral powders based on bentonites (smectites), used to regulate the rheological properties of aqueous, water-dispersed and organic paint and varnish compositions. A method for producing organo-modified clay powder for the production of paints and varnishes, including the simultaneous use of processes of activation and modification of natural bentonite raw materials with a montmorillonite content of at least 50%, while the bentonite raw materials have a cation exchange capacity (CEC) from 60 to 130 mEq/100 g and the proportion of sodium cations in the exchange complex of montmorillonite is from 20 to 100% of the CEC.

EFFECT: method for creating highly effective modified bentonite powders that can be used as thickeners, structure formers, fillers, reinforcing fillers, additives to increase thermal and heat resistance, reduce water, gas and vapor permeability, and increase resistance to solvents in compositions for various purposes, including paints and varnishes, emulsion drilling fluids, lubricants, adhesives and coatings of various functionality.
