The following is disclosed: the use of a ligand-bound copper cluster (CuC) for treating a subject with cirrhosis, wherein the ligand-bound CuC comprises the following: a copper core and a ligand, wherein the ligand binds to the copper core to form a ligand-bound copper cluster (CuC); where the copper core has a diameter in the range of 0.5–5 nm; the ligand is selected from the group consisting of L-cysteine and its derivatives, D-cysteine and its derivatives, cysteine-containing oligopeptides and their derivatives and other thiol-containing compounds.

EFFECT: invention ensures restoration of liver function.
