FIELD: pharmaceuticals.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of the purification of acrylamido-2-methyl-2-propanesulfonic acid (ATBS), used as a monomer for the synthesis of polymers used as dispersants, thickeners, flocculants or superabsorbents. The method of purifying acrylamido-2-methyl-2-propanesulfonic acid includes two successive stages: obtaining a suspension of ATBS crystals by distilling an aqueous solution of ATBS, and isolating crystals of acrylamido-2-methyl-2-propanesulfonic acid by separating the solid and liquid phases of the said suspension, wherein at the first stage, distillation is performed continuously and at subatmospheric pressure.
EFFECT: provision of a method that meets the requirements for reducing the content of impurities in the product being purified, reducing the environmental impact of toxic solvents and reducing risks for employees and facilities.
