FIELD: catalyst production.

SUBSTANCE: invention is related to a technology for production of powder of mixed oxides of zirconium, cerium and rare earth elements intended for use in catalysts for purifying automobile exhaust gases. The method involves obtaining a solution of polymerized zirconium by heating a solution of zirconium salt with holding and subsequent cooling. From the resulting solution, a sulfated zirconium sol is prepared without heating at a molar ratio of SO42-/Zr4+ from 0.3 to 0.8. The sol is mixed with solutions of soluble salts of cerium and one or more rare earth elements selected from the group of yttrium, lanthanum and neodymium to obtain a mixture with a concentration of metal oxides from 10 g/dm3 to 100 g/dm3 in terms of the final composition of mixed oxides. The hydroxides of zirconium, cerium and at least one rare earth element are jointly precipitated, hydrothermal treatment of the resulting suspension is carried out and it is filtered to obtain a paste. The paste is re-pulped in isopropyl alcohol. The resulting precipitate is dried and fired.

EFFECT: reduction in the number of stages, a reduction in the amount of surfactant used, and an increase in the oxygen capacity and specific surface area of the powder.
