SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a composition containing a mixed oxide based on cerium and zirconium. Described is a mixed oxide based on cerium and zirconium for use in processing exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, containing zirconium, cerium, lanthanum and optionally at least one rare-earth element other than cerium and lanthanum, with the following composition: 5–70 % by weight of cerium oxide; 20–80 % by weight of zirconium oxide; 1–15 % by weight of lanthanum oxide and 0–20 % by weight of at least one rare-earth element, other than cerium oxide and lanthanum oxide, wherein said mixed oxide exhibits a specific surface (specific surface determined according to the Brunauer-Emmet-Teller-specific (SBET) method) between 35 and 50 m2/g after firing at 1,100 °C for 4 hours in air atmosphere and specific surface (SBET) between 55 and 70 m2/g after firing at 1,000 °C for 4 hours in an air atmosphere.
EFFECT: mixed oxide exhibits high heat resistance and, in particular, is capable of maintaining a large specific surface even in a high-temperature environment.
