SUBSTANCE: system for treating glaucoma, comprising the following: a drainage device for treating glaucoma with a tube having a proximal end and a distal end with a channel extending from the proximal end to the distal end; an insertion device for inserting a drainage device for the treatment of glaucoma, wherein the insertion device includes an elongate handle member having a distal end defining an abutment surface with a stylus consisting of a wire, the stylus extending from a distal end of the elongate handle member, the stylus having size and configured to be placed in the channel of the glaucoma drainage device so that the abutment surface interfaces with the glaucoma drainage device and limits its proximal movement. The stylus has a first length that extends beyond the stop surface of the elongated handle element. The channel of the glaucoma drainage device tube has a second length that extends from a proximal end to a distal end of the glaucoma drainage device tube. The first length of the stylus is less than the second length of the conduit of the glaucoma drainage device such that the first length of the stylus is less than the length of the portion of the conduit of the glaucoma drainage device that extends beyond the abutment surface. The tube of the glaucoma treatment device is made of a more flexible and soft material relative to the rigid and hard material of the stylus.

EFFECT: use of this invention will support the soft flexible drainage device during packaging, sterilization and transportation, and will also facilitate its implantation into the eye.
