SUBSTANCE: invention relates to naphthalocyanine and phthalocyanine chromophores of formula (I), where M1 represents Al(R15) or Ga(R15), R15 represents OR16, R11 and R14 independently of each other represent H, R12 and R13 independently represent H or R12 and R13 together with the carbon atoms to which they are bonded form a 6-membered aromatic ring, R16 represents a group of formula (Va), formula (Vb) or CH2CH(OH)CH2OH of formula (Vc), X1 represents either O, S or NH, X2 represents

w+x+y+z=4 to 20, R9 and R10 are the same or different and each independently represents hydrogen or a methyl group, R19 represents OH, R20 represents H or C1-C4 alkyl group, R30 and R31 independently of each other represent hydrogen or a C1-C4 alkyl group, R32 represents a C1-C25 alkyl group or a C2-C25 alkenyl group, and represents 0 or 1, b is either 0 or 1, b' is either 0 or 1, c is 1, n1 is 0 or a value from 1 to 10. Also the following is proposed: the use of a compound of formula (I) as an IR radiation absorber, a composition of a printing ink and a security document containing compounds of formula (I), and a method of producing a compound of formula (I').

EFFECT: proposed compounds can be used as IR radiation absorbers in compositions for inks, paints and plastics, in particular in a wide range of printing systems and are particularly well suited for security applications for security printing.
