FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing monodisperse spherical polymer particles, particularly polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), of a given diameter. Invention can be used in colloidal chemistry, biotechnology, medicine as carriers of functional components, templates when producing more complex nano- and microparticles, calibration standards in analysis of variance. Method of producing monodisperse spherical particles of polymethyl methacrylate of a given size is based on emulsion polymerisation of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in an aqueous medium while heating. Obtaining is carried out in two stages: at the first one synthesizes particles that are deliberately smaller than a given size, at the second stage, particles are grown to a given final diameter by adding an additional amount of methyl methacrylate. Additional amount of MMA is calculated by formula
where mext is the calculated weight of methyl methacrylate for growing polymethyl methacrylate particles (g), m is the weight of the grown polymethyl methacrylate particles (g), mw is the weight of water added at the growing step, (g), D is the target diameter of the methyl methacrylate particles (nm), d is the diameter of the polymethyl methacrylate particles obtained at the previous growth stage, (nm).
EFFECT: proposed invention enables to obtain polymer spherical particles of PMMA with a predetermined diameter in range of 200–1,200 nm with standard deviation of not more than 5 %.
