FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and a system for forming a rendering of a tinted wooden substrate. Method includes steps of: receiving (102) an image (SI) of a wood substrate to be toned; dividing the range of colours that are present in the image into a plurality of colour bands; image is subdivided (104) into plurality of image fragments, wherein each portion of the image corresponds to a portion of the image having a colour falling within the corresponding one of the colour bands; for each image fragment, deriving (106) a reflection coefficient curve characteristic of the wood substrate for the colour corresponding to the image fragment; extracting (108) values of absorption and dispersion for toning; for each image fragment, (110) reflection coefficient curve characteristic of the tinted wood is determined based on the absorption and scattering values for the tint and the reflection coefficient curve for the wood substrate for the given image fragment; and for each pixel of each image fragment, determining (112) a colour based on a reflection coefficient curve characteristic of the tinted wood, and a formed image is obtained, which is a wooden substrate after tinting.

EFFECT: high quality of rendering a tinted wooden substrate.
