Device for dispensing blood from a patient into a collection vessel comprises an adapter unit comprising a body defining a blood flow path and which is configured to be connected to a blood collection kit, wherein the adapter unit has a volume indicator located therein, which measures the volume of blood flowing along the blood flow path. Sensor unit is connected to the adapter unit. Sensor unit comprises a sensor configured to detect sensor signals in response to the passage of blood along the blood flow path in the transition unit, and a processor which associates the sensory signals with the blood volume and controls the response of the sensor unit in response to the sensor unit determining that the predetermined blood volume has passed through the transient unit. Disclosed is an alternative embodiment of a device for dispensing blood from a patient into a collection vessel, and a method for determining the volume of blood flowing from a patient into the vessel.
