FIELD: machine building.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electrodynamic braking systems for vehicles. Automatic rheostatic braking system for an alternating current electric locomotive contains a power supply unit, a command input unit, an input filter, a unit of resistors connected to the traction motor by means of a contactor for switching on the unit of resistors during rheostatic braking, a unit for controlling additional functions made with possibility of switching on relays and/or contactors, braking mode parameters recorder, programmable logic integrated circuit (PLIC), high-voltage rectifier (HVR), digital-to-analogue converter, analogue-to-digital converter, excitation current transducer, and electric locomotive traction motor armature current transducer. HVR contains control pulse generator and is made with possibility of control from PLIC signals and control of current in traction motor excitation windings. Also disclosed is a method of braking an electric locomotive using a braking system.
EFFECT: higher reliability of braking system and reduced wear of brake pads.
