SUBSTANCE: invention relates to oil industry. Valve and a method for determining the position of the sliding coupling of the valve (embodiments) are disclosed. Valve can comprise an outer housing, a sliding coupling within the outer housing, an electrical circuit comprising one or more magnetic switches, a magnet connected to the sliding sleeve, an information processing system in communication with the electrical circuit, configured to determine the axial position of the sliding sleeve based on the open or closed states of the magnetic switches, and a linear variable resistor located adjacent to the magnetic switch array, wherein the information processing system is configured to determine the axial position of the sliding sleeve based on current passing through the linear variable resistor, and using the axial position determined using the magnetic switch array to calibrate the axial position determined using the linear variable resistor.
