FIELD: instrument engineering.
SUBSTANCE: discloses method and device for generating pulses in a fluid column, such as inside a well. Described typical hydraulic pulse generator has a valve element, piston configured to linearly move within a piston chamber for flow control by selectively closing the fluid flow path. Fluid flow path may extend around at least a portion of the piston chamber and intersect with it at an angle relative to the axis of motion of the valve element. Piston can linearly move from the closed position or the position in which it passes the minimum flow to the position, in which it passes the maximum flow and, optionally, to any of a series or range of positions between them. Position of the valve element can be changed to generate hydraulic pulses with a selected combination of duration, amplitude, etc., to generate a signal in a fluid column that can be registered at a location remote from the hydraulic pulse generator.
EFFECT: valve element position can be changed to generate hydraulic pulses with the selected duration combination.
