SUBSTANCE: embodiments presented in this document disclose methods, devices and systems which improve access control by using locks with an intelligent cylinder. In one embodiment, the intelligent cylinder can perform a method comprising receiving a key, emitting an electromagnetic radiation energy source, detecting, in said energy source, a change caused by a physical property of the key, determining the physical property of the key based on the change in the energy source, comparing this physical property with a given value and activating a mechanism operably associated with the lock device and enabling the lock device to be locked or unlocked when the physical property corresponds to a predetermined value.
