FIELD: encoding and decoding.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods of encoding and decoding a point cloud. A method for encoding and decoding a point cloud, an encoder and a decoder is disclosed. Method includes: obtaining geometric information and information relating to an attribute of an input point cloud; determining the maximum allowable value of the sampling period when the input point cloud is subjected to level of detail (LOD) distribution; determining a predetermined value of the sampling period based on the maximum allowable value of the sampling period; processing the input point cloud according to a preset value of the sampling period and geometric information to obtain at least one refinement layer and at least one detail layer; and encoding information relating to the attribute using at least one refinement level and at least one level of detail to generate a code stream, and recording the preset value of the sampling period into the code stream.

EFFECT: improved consistency of the system, while increasing efficiency of encoding and decoding.
