SUBSTANCE: invention refers to medicine and can be used for treating acute cerebral affection. Disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition comprising a neuroprotective amount of uridine dissolved in physiological saline, and a neuroprotective amount of beta-hydroxybutyrate and a cationic counterion, wherein beta-hydroxybutyrate is a D-enantiomer of beta-hydroxybutyrate. Described is a method of treating acute cerebral injury in a subject using a pharmaceutical composition. Disclosed is a system for delivering uridine and beta-hydroxybutyrate for treating an acute brain injury in a subject. System includes a reservoir capable of retaining a solution containing uridine, beta-hydroxybutyrate and a cationic counterion in physiological saline, and a pump for moving the solution from the reservoir through one or more infusion needles to a subject, wherein the solution is a pharmaceutical composition.
EFFECT: invention enables fast, controlled introduction of systemic uridine in concentrations and for periods of time sufficient to protect the brain and other tissues without harmful side effects, such as hyperthermia or phlebitis, and without the need for a central venous approach for administration.
