SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of improving time characteristics of neutron pulses for neutron generators and can be used to analyse composition of substances, neutron logging of wells and scientific research. A constant negative voltage Uex from -20 kV to -100 kV is supplied to the accelerating electrode and the target of the neutron tube using an accelerating voltage source, positive voltage Ugetter from 3 V to 5 V is supplied to the getter from the power supply of the gas generator. Cathodes of the ion source of the neutron tube are grounded, to the anode of the ion source of the neutron tube a pulse-periodic voltage is supplied with amplitude Ua from 1 kV to 4 kV, duration tpulse from 30 mcs to 200 mcs and repetition frequency υ from 0.4 kHz to 10 kHz. An additional positive bias voltage Ubias from 20 V to 200 V, which does not exceed 10% of the amplitude of the voltage pulse at the anode, is supplied in the pause between impulses to the anode of the Penning ion source of the neutron tube using an anode voltage source and a switching unit.

EFFECT: reduction of current pulse delay time at reduction of the generator current pulse leading edge duration and reduction of current pulse gaps.
