SUBSTANCE: invention relates to organic chemistry and specifically to a method of producing novel separate compounds of 1,3-diazole class containing oxo groups. Method of producing 5-hydroxy-5-(2-oxo-2-phenylethyl)imidazolidine-2,4-dione of general formula

involves reaction of 5-phenylfuran-2,3-dione with urea in a solvent medium and boiling at 83-84 °C followed by separation of the end product, wherein the solvent used is anhydrous dichloroethane or dimethyl sulphoxide and the boiling time is 5 minutes. 5-hydroxy-5-(2-oxo-2-phenylethyl)imidazolidine-2,4-dione is used as an agent having antimicrobial activity on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli cultures and antifungal activity on Candida albicans culture.
EFFECT: novel compound 5-hydroxy-5-(2-oxo-2-phenylethyl)imidazolidine-2,4-dione has high biological activity and is suitable for use in pharmacology.
