FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing 1,7-di-(hydroxymethyl)-m-carborane. Method involves two-step alcoholysis with a lower aliphatic alcohol of 1,7-di-(acetoxymethyl)-m-carborane or an alcoholic solution thereof in the presence of an acid, consisting of boiling reaction mass for 2-3 hours and distillation of azeotrope alkyl alcohol-alkyl acetate to obtain an intermediate product, containing 1,7-di-(hydroxymethyl)-m-carborane, followed by extraction of 1,7-di-(hydroxymethyl)-m-carborane by water deposition from the remaining alcohol solution, filtering and washing with water. Intermediate product is then dried and purified from impurities by boiling with toluene in weight ratio of 1:1.2, respectively. Toluene-water azeotrope is distilled off, cooled and filtered. Filter cake is washed with toluene and dried under vacuum to obtain 1,7-di-(hydroxymethyl)-m-carborane.
EFFECT: obtaining highly pure 1,7-di-(hydroxymethyl)-m-carborane with melting point 193-195 °C, as well as ensuring high productivity of the method on the desired product.
