FIELD: processes for the preparation of ac catalytic system component for the polymerization of a-olefins. SUBSTANCE: the process comprises reducing titanium tetrachloride in the presence of a magnesium compound which is magnesium chloride. Titanium tetrachloride is reduced b y electrolysis on a cathode made of a material having a high hydrogen in a methanol solution. The latter contains (wt): 0.0056- 0.06 titanium tetrachloride and 0.56-0.87 MgCl2. The process makes it possible to replace hydrocarbon solvents by readily available methanol and to employ electrochemical reduction instead of reduction with an organomagnesium compound which is difficult to obtain.
