FIELD: catalytic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: the process is carried out by dissolving pallaium chloride in a boiling aqueous solution of sodium molybdate at a Mo to Pd molar ration of 1-1.5:1. The reduction is then carried out with hydrogen at room temperature to metallic palladium. The resulting colloidal solution of palladium is mixed with an inorganic carrier till the solution becomes discolored, the catalyst precipitate is separated, washed and dried. Under these conditions the process is made simpler by hydrogenation at room temperature for 20 min as against 26 hours at 100 C in the prior art process; colloidal solution of palladium may be kept for a long time. Besides, the amount of water required for washing off the catalyst from the accompanying ions is reduced by 10 to 100 times. EFFECT: the resulting catalyst is highly active and selective (up to 14 mmole/s g Pd and 99%) with a high DMVC yield (up to 4178 g/g Pd*hr as against 440 g/g Pd*hr. 1 tbl
