FIELD: treatment of materials with high-energy sources. SUBSTANCE: working surface of tool made of high-speed steel or hard alloys is radiated with pulse of powerful ionic beam of nanosecond duration with energy flux of 1-3 J/sq.cm and pulse dose 1-3 J/cm2-2,5×1013-1×1014cm-2. Formed on treated surface is glassy layer under which modified layer 80-200 microns deep is located which is characterized by fine grains and high density of dislocation. EFFECT: prolonged service life and extension of range of cutting materials. 1 tbl
