FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: method of investigation of planar optical waveguide involves creation of optical contact between surface of waveguide and coupling element, measurement of angular distribution of radiation intensity passing through waveguide and computation of parameters of waveguide in agreement with angular distribution. Excitation of waveguide is performed by conversion of coordinate distribution of radiation of source into angular one. Measurement of angular distribution of radiation passed through waveguide is accomplished after its conversion into coordinate distribution. Coupling element for implementation of method has inner surface which presents reflecting profile, for instance paraboloid, which provides for conversion of coordinate-angle with input of radiation and conversion angle-coordinate with output of radiation.
