FIELD: metal working. SUBSTANCE: workpiece is conveyed to container, compression force is applied to side surface of the container, back extrusion of metal is executed through die, compression stresses are released from side surface of the container, and the cycle of these operations is repeated. Apparatus for carrying out the invention has detachable container accommodating hollow punch with die. Container has reciprocation drive and mechanism for radial displacement of container segments. Inner surface of the container is provided with annular projection having in a closed state of the container a minor axis perpendicular to the parting plane of the container.
