FIELD: nuclear engineering. SUBSTANCE: high-temperature nuclear reactor comprises active zone with fuel elements, with cooling air supplied from the bottom and discharged at the top. Cooling gas flows through the active zone from bottom up. There is at least one bypass channel whose lower and upper ends communicate, respectively, with supply and discharge of cooling gas. Under normal working conditions a portion (up to 10%) of cooling gas flows through said bypass channel. This channel accommodates at least one cooler for creating the descending flow of cooling gas in the bypass channel for transferring residual heat. In this case the design of the channel and cooler must provide for the flow through the channel of up to 5% of the total mass flow rate of cooling gas in normal operating mode of the reactor. The cooler may have naturally circulated gaseous cooling medium. Several bypass channels may be arranged uniformly around the cross sectional perimeter of the cylindrical active zone. In another embodiment of the reactor the bypass channel is located in its central zone in which case the active zone has a circular cross section. EFFECT: improved design. 7 cl, 1 dwg
