MOSAIC ARTICLE MANUFACTURING METHOD Russian patent published in 1994 - IPC

FIELD: production of ornamental articles. SUBSTANCE: method involves sawing blocks having different colors into rectangular plates; connecting plates to obtain packs; cutting planar mosaic members from pack of plates in accordance with predetermined pattern; laying plates on substrate covered with lubricant and inserting planar members of one color into plate of other color; filling joints with binder; grinding and polishing face surface. In case plates from fine-grain marble are used, sawn-out mosaic members and plates are heated to 350 C and bismuth melt is used as binder for joints. In case width of sawing does not exceed 100 μm, one of plates is heated to 50-200 C. Laser devices may be used for sawing. For the purpose of economy of valuable kinds of stone thin plate of valuable stone and thick plate of cheap stone are to be used. When stone-cutting disk lathes are used, mosaic pattern is applied on lower plate and recesses are made by diamond disk so that sawing lines coincide with mosaic pattern outlines on lower plate. When customary disk lathes are used, mosaic pattern contour is applied on upper plate, recesses are made along the length of lines of contour by diamond disk. Strip saw is inserted into recesses and packs of plates are sawn through the whole depth. EFFECT: high quality of article and increased ornamental effect combined with economy. 8 cl, 1 tbl
