FIELD: cleaning of hydrocarbon gases. SUBSTANCE: method involves cleaning hydrocarbon gases from mercaptans by oxidation to elementary sulfur in presence of iron-chromium-zinc catalyst at 200 C, dividing the untreated gas into two streams in a volume relation of 5 - 10:1. The first stream is directed to oxidation while the second one is mixed with oxidation products in a volume relation (in terms of mercaptans and sulfur dioxide) of 1.5 - 2.2:1 respectively, then passing the resulting mixture through catalyst at a volumetric gas velocity of 4000-6000 h-1 at 160-220 C. Oxidation is conducted at a mass relation of ethylmercaptan to air oxygen of 1:1.1-1.2, respectively. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 4 cl, 1 tbl
