FIELD: machining of materials. SUBSTANCE: invention can find use in automobile industry for manufacture of glasses and mirrors, in electronic industry for cutting of precision substrates for liquid-crystal indicators and masks, magnetic and magneto-optical discs, in watch industry for manufacture of protective glasses, in aviation industry for manufacture of articles of structural optics, in architecture and construction for dimensional location and spacing of glass blanks, and in other branches of industry and technology where precision articles produced from nonmetal materials are used. Process includes heating to temperature not exceeding that of material softening. Rate of relative movement of beam and material and point of local cooling zone are selected from condition of formation of non-through separating crack in material. EFFECT: increased efficiency and precision. 10 cl, 6 dwg, 1 tbl
