FIELD: production of metallic nickel. SUBSTANCE: method involves delivery of reaction gas containing nickel carbonyl vapors and their thermal decomposition on the heated external surface of a rotating drum. The device for realization of the method comprises reaction chamber with drive drum, reaction gas delivery unit, reaction products discharge unit and unit for withdrawal of produced strip. The amount of reaction gas delivered to outer section is 1.2-1.6 times larger than its amount delivered to the central portion of the drum. The delivery unit is arranged coaxially with the drum, has a slot of variable section whose clear area can be adjusted by a split bushing installed inside. The relation of areas of the central and outer portions of the slot is 1:1.2-1:1.6, the length of each outer portion of the slot is 5-20% of its total length and the area of each outer portion is 5-20% of the total drum area. The delivery unit has the form of a cylinder. Each end face of the rotating drum has water-cooled radiators with a fluoroplastic ring whose outside diameter is larger than the drum diameter by the thickness of the formed strip.
