FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: method relates to evaluation of strength of pressure vessels. Increased precision of evaluation of strength and prediction of point of failure of welded joint in structure are obtained by cutting of samples carrying various zones of weld and base metal, by their tensile testing till failure, by determination of ultimate strength σB using it to estimate strength parameter. Yield point or limit of proportionality are also found. Longitudinal relative deformation εm in smallest section at maximum load, relative necking Ψ after failure and value and sign of residual welding stresses are fixed. With the aid of fixed values maximum possible relative increment of strength D is determined with allowance for geometry of structure and maximum stress sm is computed for material of each zone. Maximum value σm is selected as strength parameter and failure of material in zone with specified minimal value is predicted. EFFECT: increased precision of evaluation of strength and prediction of point of failure of metal. 2 tbl
