FIELD: engine engineering. SUBSTANCE: to employ the method a control instrument, which supplies power to the glow plug during heating, is required. The temperature of preliminary heating of the glow plug, which is required for starting, is achieved independently of varying boundary conditions by repeating the following stages: i) voltage is measured at the outlet of the control instrument; ii) duration of the glow plug heating depending on this voltage is measured; iii) a mean for this stage is determined by dividing a given normal value of time interval needed for the preliminary heating by obtained value of the time interval needed for preliminary heating; iv) separate stage means are added in a memory discharged to the instant of staring the method; v) the memory content is compared with a given normal mean and the preliminary heating is stopped on achieving normal mean or returning to the stage i) until the normal mean will be achieved.
