FIELD: tobacco industry. SUBSTANCE: steam or steam-containing hot gas is passed through drying pipe 18. Tobacco is delivered through charging hole 34 into stream of hot gas passing through the drying pipe. As a result, tobacco is heated and expanded (loosened). Water steam or water is injected into the stream of hot gas through injection nozzles 61a, 61b, 61c and 61d disposed downstream of charging hole 34 for changing the gas temperature. This controls the amount of heat transferred to tobacco from hot gas in order to prevent deterioration of tobacco quality. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 7 cl, 3 dwg, 3 tbl
