FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: method involves processing wastes of 2,6-tert-butyl-4-methyl phenol production, reaction products from rectification stage being used. Residue of distillation are dealkylated within 4-6 h at 140-150 C. The process is carried out in the presence of 5-30 mass % of light fraction of 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol and catalyst (its quantity being 1.65-5 % of mass of raw materials). Mentioned above light fraction of 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol contains 45-60 mass % of 2-tert-butyl phenol, 15-25 mass % of 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol and phenol; aluminium salt of benzene sulfoacid being used as said catalyst.
