FIELD: welding; self-controlled electrode melting process. SUBSTANCE: self- control of process is provided by periodically changing electrode feed speed, with speed of melting at maximum feed speed set not to exceed 0.9 of indicated feed speed. Duration of periods of maximum feed speed is maintained equal to 0.5-0.9 of duration of reduction of electrode-to-electrode space to zero or equal to sum of durations of reduction of electrode-to-electrode space to zero and subsequent dipping of end of electrode through 0.9 of pool depth, maximum. When end of electrode touches pool surface, voltage is reduced to value smaller than nominal value, and after period of maximum feed speed of electrode, feeding is reversed, amplitude of reversing being smaller than feeding amplitude by value of electrode diameter. Electrode feed speed is decreased or increased in steps. Dipping of electrode end in pool is effected at the last step of feed speed rise. EFFECT: enlarged operating capabilities. 5 cl, 6 dwg, 3 tbl
