FIELD: mechanical engineering; internal combustion engines. SUBSTANCE: to reduce losses, fuel gases are expanded first in engine cylinder 1 to provide maximum useful work, and then in thermodynamic energy exchanger 5 in which air is compressed to parameters corresponding to beginning of fuel burning. Then compressed air is accumulated in receiver 7 with preservation of obtained parameters and is used as necessary to prepare mixture. Air is compressed in two stages: first with cooling in cooler 6, and then with prevention of heat losses owing to heat insulation of receiver 7. Piston internal combustion engine has housing with cylinders 1, pistons 2 and fuel mixture preparation system including two-stage thermodynamic energy exchanger 5 with cooler 6 installed between stages of exchanger. Output of second stage is connected to heat insulated receiver 7 connected through valves 8 with engine cylinders. Combustion chamber 9 can be installed between receiver 7 and cylinder 1.
