FIELD: instrumentation engineering, monitoring of level of drinking and technical water in reservoirs of water supply systems. SUBSTANCE: proposed float-type level indicator includes float mounted on pipe which bearing structure is flange of vertical pipe union of monitored reservoir and reading device into which cavity counter-weight fitted with flexible tie with float is placed. Reading device incorporates illuminator, modulator of luminous flux and photoconverter connected through communication line to secondary device. Output signal of reading device presents sequence of photopulses formed by periodic shutting of luminous flux of illuminator by three groups of opaque parallel stripes applied in some way on to information tapes of modulator which is provided with automatic switching over of two optical channels depending on direction of linear displacement of float. It helps to form output signal in form convenient for further processing, to use it not only for monitoring over level of water but for correction of operational modes of pumps and gates depending on degree of filling of monitored reservoir and to expand functional capabilities of known level indicator.
