FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: method includes charging blend containing quartzite, reducing mix, and wood chips; continuous fusion penetration; blowing in gas into under-electrode cavities; periodical tapping and continuous removal of gaseous smelting products. According to invention, CO-containing gas is used, upon blowing in of which SiO concentration in gas flowing round electrode ends is maintained on the level of 20-25%, and SiO/CO ratio is 0.25-0.33. As CO-containing gas, blast furnace gas from closed-top ore-smelting furnaces is used. As gas-powder mixture, those containing equivalent amounts of oxygen or air or carbon dioxide, or water vapor with petroleum coke are used. In the beginning of smelting, 1.9-6.2 cu.m of CO-containing gas per 100 kg quartzite is blown in into under-electrode cavities, and toward the end of smelting, amount of gas is gradually lowered to 1.3-3.7 cu.m/100 kg of quartzite. EFFECT: improved parameters of process. 5 cl, 1 tbl
