FIELD: catalysts for organic reactions. SUBSTANCE: in a method consisting in mixing powder metals - lanthanum, nickel, and cobalt, caking prepared mixture, and compacting it with binding agent, for mixing, nickel, cobalt, lanthanum oxide, and calcium hydride are taken. Resultant mixture is heated, in the course of which calcium hydride reduces lanthanum oxide into metal lanthanum and, after diffusion alloy formation, intermetallic compound LaNi3Co2 is formed including calcium oxide which is removed after hydrolysis and acid treatment. Content of impurities in prepared intermetallide does not exceed (in wt %): oxides, 0.4-0.5; nitrogen, 0.04-0.055; silicon, 0.1; carbon, 0.1, which meets requirements for hydrogen accumulating materials. EFFECT: considerably reduced cost due to using inexpensive lanthanum oxide instead of expensive and hard-to-reach metal lanthanum with simultaneously retaining high catalytic activity. 1 tbl
