FIELD: organic chemistry and technology. SUBSTANCE: method involves the successive interaction of 6-methyluracil with chlorosulfonic acid at 80-90 C and then with thionyl chloride at 60-75 C in the presence of catalytic amount of dimethylformamide (0.035-0.095 mole per 1 mole 6-methyluracil). Yield is 85-90%. Synthesized compound is used for synthesis of dyes and drugs. EFFECT: increased yield, decreased consumption of reagents and safety of sulfochlorination reaction. 1 tbl
