FIELD: manufacture of porous products or powders of improved chemical purity. SUBSTANCE: composition for preparation of high-melting metal monocarbide comprises (wt%) 58.9-74.1 high-melting metal oxide; 12.7-20.2 phenol-formaldehyde binder; 10.8-17.1 hardened phenol-formaldehyde resin (carbon carrier); 2.4-3.8 zinc stearate. Weight ratio of phenol formaldehyde binder and hardened phenol-formaldehyde resin powder is (1-1.2):1. Composition components are mixed, rolled and ground and products, e.g. discs are pressed from molding powder. Porous carbonized products are prepared by heating to 800 C in oxidation-resistant medium. Vacuum heating of said products in vacuum produces porous carbides of high-melting metals such as zirconium, hafnium, niobium, and tantalum. EFFECT: improved properties. 1 tbl
