METHOD FOR PRODUCTION OF MODIFIED ACTIVATED COAL Russian patent published in 1997 - IPC

FIELD: production of activated coal; production of adsorbents; petrochemical industry, chemical industry, metallurgical industry; purification of sewage against organic and other impurities. SUBSTANCE: raw charcoal or raw hard carbonized coal is ground to fraction being 1-5 m in size and is impregnated with saturated aqueous solution of ammonium thiocyanate, potassium thiocyanate or sodium, urea or thiourea (its quantity is 10-20 % of carbon content) and is allowed to stand within 5-6 h. Then heat treatment at 310-370 C within 2.5-3 h is carried out. The process is followed by activation of coal at 800-850 C which takes place with the help of overheated vapor or with the help of carbon dioxide. Said activation is carried out at 0.5-6 h till degree of combustion loss is 5-30 %. Method is simple, effective, safety and no special complex devices for its realization are needed. Granulated modified coal being prepared with the help of proposed method has high sorption capacity to organic compounds. EFFECT: increased sorption capacity of modified activated coal.
