FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: self-locking conical differential has locking device made up as insert 7 with teeth from two opposite sides. The insert is mounted on axle 3 of satellites for permitting movement for engaging teeth of opposite gears 5. The width of the hollows between the teeth of the insert is chosen so that to allow for divergence of the teeth of the insert and gears. When the speeds of rotation of the wheels of a vehicle are the same insert 7 is fixed with respect to housing 1. When the vehicle turns the insert is set in revers-tangent motion with respect to housing 1 engaging one or other gear 5, alternately, thus allowing gear 5 to rotate faster. When the vehicle slips insert 7 wedges teeth of gears 5 thus locking the differential. EFFECT: enhanced reliability. 9 dwg
