FIELD: abrasive materials. SUBSTANCE: abrasive contains alumina-based particles with <100 nm average-thickness coating made up of refractory compound - boride, carbide or nitride of metal selected from the group containing Sc, La, Ce, Ne, Y, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Ni, Ta, Cr, Mo, W or their mixtures. Abrasive article has base carrying above-mentioned abrasive particles. Abrasive is manufactured by way of treating alumina-based particles in plasma stream with applying coating using supplying current to metal cathode to form plasma of coating-forming metal under atmosphere favoring metal boride, carbide or nitride formation, whereupon plasma stream is directed through anode and alumina-based particles are treated in plasma stream until uniform metal boride, carbide or nitride coating with required thickness is formed on each particle.
