FIELD: four-high mills for cold and hot rolling of steel sheets. SUBSTANCE: method comprises alternative steps of cyclically loading backup roll in rolling stand and performing heat treatment of it for determining intensity degree of strain hardening of roll according to increased hardness of its barrel. In order to enhance efficiency of rolled sheet production process after (0.1-0.3)106 loading cycles maximum value of hardness increase along the whole length of roll barrel is determined according to relation: N=k ΔHVmax, where N - number of loading cycles before heat treatment, k -proportionality factor equal to (0.08-0.15)106 for chrome steels, ΔHVmax- maximum value of hardness increase by Vickers along the whole length of roll barrel. In variants of invention heat treatment is realized by heating up to 110-130 C, seasoning at such temperature for 22-26 hours or by aging backup roll at 5-35 C for 5-6 days.
